Heels are my kryptonite. I can stroll through any shoe store and be drawn immediately to the most impractical, fabulous stiletto heels in the store – and want them badly.  The key is NOT to try those types of shoe temptations on…cause if I do…I’m in trouble.  Then there are the times when I don’t even need to try them on – I just know – I want them.  This is the case with a little obsession I have with a certain little shoe with the red ‘look at my fabulous little shoe self walking away’ sole.

I know…. Normally I wouldn’t really entertain the thought (who am I kidding – I entertain the thought all the time) of paying so much money for a pair of shoes but I have a little ‘fun’ money that can definitely be spent on something a little over the top so I thought ‘What the heck – I should go for it’.  Which leads me to my heel problem – I have to be fashion savvy and be a tiny bit practical in my heel decision making – since the cost is substantial for a pair of shoes.  Practical?  I am not…  So this one is difficult.

The Christian Louboutin black pump is my end game.  That’s practical right?  A black pump goes with anything right?  Yet when I look at all the Louboutin black pump options it makes me a little dizzy.  How can the black pump take on so many personalities?  Platform, pointy toe, round toe, patent, leather, high heel, low heel, mid heel, toe cleavage, no toe cleavage – arrgghh – it’s all too much and I can’t decide!  I want the pump to be timeless and appropriate for work, but I don’t want to sacrifice the ‘high’ heel as I love a good 3 inch heel.

Here are my options:

Platform Pump – I am on the fence with this shoe style.  I like the look of the platform and it is a comfortable style of shoe to wear but sometimes the platform takes your outfit to the less conservative side of the spectrum.  The platform feels a little more ‘party girl’ to me.  Timeless?  Not so sure.

Pointy Toe Pump – I love the pointy toe pump – this is one of my favorite styles.  The pointy toe adds some kick to any outfit and I love wearing them with my skinny jeans for a night out or with a pencil skirt to work.  Only negative to the pointy toe pump is…your little toes can sometimes pay the price.

Round Toe Pump – This feels like the most conservative and less appealing pump option to me.  For some reason the round toe doesn’t do it for me – the round toe puts out a boring kinda vibe to me.  Although – the round toe has stood the test of time.  Timeless?  I would have to say yes and timeless is what I said I wanted but….

Peep Toe Pump – another one of my favorite shoe styles but I live in Canada where unfortunately winter takes over for far too many months to fully enjoy my peep toes.

So tell me – what would your pump of choice be?

Darn heel problems…..

It’s Party Time – But What Do I Wear?

Tis the season to be Merry, Party, Eat….

I most enjoy the party portion of the holidays – who doesn’t?  All the sparkly dresses, shoes and jewelry. How is a Modern Mom supposed to define her holiday party look with all the fab choices out there? Turns out this year I had do a little ‘on the fly’ holiday dress up and my holiday party choices were limited to – my very own closet. We arrived home from our sweet beach destination vacation the same day as my work holiday party which was happening the same evening.  Mr. Modern and I were a little indecisive as to if we wanted to arrive home in the morning and then head to a party the same evening.  But really – who was I kidding – I can’t pass up a party…  So mid week into our holiday, as we were sipping our 5th Mudslide (but who was really counting) of the day, we finally decided that continuing to party when we returned home is a win-win situation.   But as a result of this quick decision to go to the holiday party I had no holiday outfit purchased, planned – nothing! Normally I would be in fashion freak out panic mode (I must have been still feeling those beachy chill out vibes) when I took a look in my closet to figure out what I was going to wear and here is what I found…

I found that if you go into your closet with an open mind, a glass of wine and are good with ‘recycling’ Christmas sparkle from your Christmas party past, you come out with a pretty fantastic outfit. I have been ‘holiday partying’ for many a year so I had some things to choose from but some of the items are a little dated so I had to get a little creative.

Holiday Outfit  I had purchased a short satin skirt from Le Chateau three years a go. The skirt is short and flirty and it had a little layer of crinoline showing below the hem of the skirt and an organza ribbon for a belt.  Hmmm… I like the structure of the skirt but when I tried it on the crinoline and the belt did not do it for me this time around so out came the scissors.   I cut the crinoline to just above the hem so there was still a little bounce to my step but you couldn’t see the existing crinoline, removed the belt and cut the belt loops off and – Voila – my old holiday skirt was new again.

Bottom chosen – check!  Now for the perfect matching top and shoes.  I do have some nice sparkly tops for the season but I decided to be a little different this year and I chose a more casual jewel tone top which completed my newly acquired tan and the skirt quite nicely.  The shoes – not a problem – I have so many heels to choose from so this was the easiest choice.  Jewelry – I dug through my jewelry box and found a necklace that I had bought 5 years ago and added it to the outfit (turns out after I did my hair – I didn’t need the necklace but at least I had jewelry backup).

I am always thankful for small things so I was very proud of myself for not freaking out over my unplanned holiday party outfit.  I also love that I have discovered that my closet is a little treasure in itself as I can now not be afraid of re-visiting my fashion past and re-work to make the past new again.  I also learned that you don’t have to overdo the sparkle or bling to create a great holiday look.  Now that is a little Holiday Magic – and – Mr. Modern is super happy….not a dime was spent on my little Holiday Party.
