A Modern Mom’s Style Situation

Here is my style situation – 37 year old Modern Mom – determined not to be caught in the ‘mom jean, sweatshirt wearing’ style trap.
For the most part I think I do a pretty good job of staying out of the non-modern mom clothing zone. I watch the trends and shop the trends when they suit my style personality but I have to admit that sometimes I find a trip to the mall can be a little daunting if you don’t have an eye and vision for your personal style.  I have had many amusing conversations with friends over shopping for clothing and we all find that the main stream clothing store options are this – slutty style or grandma style.  Hmmm….neither of those style options are appealing for all of us glam girls in our 30’s.

I find women in their 30’s still have the flexibility to shop the ‘younger generation’ stores like AE, Express, Stitches, Urban Outfitters…. in moderation.  Although…sometimes when I am in these stores I feel ‘just a teeny bit old’ as the salesgirl in her booty shorts and crop top is trying to sell me on the latest pair of skinny jeans in the store and the only sizes that are on the rack are size 0 and size 2.  Sorry sweet little sales girl who I wish I had your cute little body – I need to get both my legs into these jeans.  So if I can’t shop all the time in the younger generation stores…where does a 30 something shop?

I am a stay-at-home mom so my daily style choices are on the casual side.  I said casual…not sloppy.  When I go shopping I normally look for jeans, blazers, dressy/non dressy tops and I also enjoy trying on the new trendy styles that are practical for my daily activities.  I also try to make sure that my clothing choices don’t make me look like ‘Teen Mom’. To me this means I must purchase: jeans that fully cover the bum crack,  shirts without a ‘This Girl is Hot’ logo on it, and I make sure my cleavage is there but not ‘out there’.  That’s not asking a lot…or is it?

As I ponder this shopping style situation I am running through my closet in my head and thinking of the items that were in my closet 10 years ago and what is in my closet today.  I came up with a few things that I know that I have ‘discontinued’ or re-worked in my 30 something wardrobe.

blazerstarbucksLogo T-Shirts • yes the days of having a cute little logo on my shirt are behind me – for the most part.  I do have a few logo shirts but instead of wearing them on their own I mix the t-shirt with a blazer to tone down the logo and make it part of the outfit instead of the focal.

Blazer – bought at Stitches.  This is one of those rare times that I was shopping at what I consider a teen-20 something store and found this little gem.  I think it was 20 dollars and I wear it all the time – very versatile.

Starbucks T-Shirt – this was an EBay find.  I saw a Starbucks tank on Pinterest and it peaked my interest so I did a little online shopping and found this.

jeansblogJeans •   I have to admit that when I shop for jeans now I do look for a higher rise.  Gasp….I know – I said it.  The mid to higher rise jean is my new best friend.   Thanks to all the denim choices out there now I am happy to say that it is not that hard to find a really nice pair of jeans with a higher waist cut.   Now let’s all calm down – when I say high rise I mean a jean that buttons just under my belly button – you know the kind – that keeps a little tummy in place if necessary.  I also find that paying a little extra money for a higher end jean gets you some nicer fit options.

I mostly shop for my jeans in Anthropologie, Aritzia and 7 for All Mankind with my favorite brands being J Brand, Pilcro and the Letterpress and Citizens of Humanity.  I have also found some kinder to the wallet brands like the jeans from Express and the Gap fit nicely.

Jeans in the photo are Citizens of Humanity and yes…they are high rise

shortsblogShorts • this item of clothing is definitely a challenge.  I find shorts are either way too short or way too long but when I do find a pair that I am happy with I stock up.  In fact – to avoid my love/hate relationship for shorts  I have mostly traded in my shorts for skirts and maxi dresses in the summer.

The length of the shorts in the picture are in my length comfort zone.  I have the option of rolling the shorts up or down so this pair offers a couple of length options which I like.   The shorts are ‘pre-ripped’ or worn in if you want to call it that in some places on the shorts.  I don’t know if that puts me into Teen Mom category or not but I like the look of the outfit when I pair it with a dressier item like a blazer.

Denim shorts are Pilcro and the Letterpress • Blazer is Talula • Tank is Wilfred Free

Shoes1Shoes • my favorite part of any outfit.  I ♥ shoes.  My go-to’s are my ballet flats, boots, sandals and my Converse.  We all had a pair of Converse when we were 12 didn’t we?  Full circle..  All I can say about shoes is… buy a lot, buy what you love and wear them till the soles fall off.  I could go on and on about my heels but I will save that for another post…
