Flipping through one of my fave magazines this week I came across an article on a trend that takes me back a few years. I know fashion trends recycle themselves but some trends should rest in peace. In the late 80’s and early 90’s – in my formative not so fashionable teenage years – Hypercolor t-shirts were a very popular trend. The t-shirts were dyed with a thermochromic color which changed color with the heat on your body or when you and your junior high boyfriend got a little too close (just saying….). There is nothing hotter than walking around with a hand print on your back or colored armpits. What were we thinking?! Yes – I was guilty of indulging in the Hypercolor T-Shirt craze along with all my girlfriends who each had one in all the colors of the thermochromic rainbow. My t-shirt was blue and when you touched my shirt the area that was touched turned a pinkish color. Hot hey? Hot mess I think!
All Hypercolor shirt flashbacks lead me to today, 20 some years later, where I discovered that Naked and Famous Denim has brought back the ‘heat’ trend in clothing. The company has created men and women’s thermochromic skinny jeans that, true to their trend, change color when the fabric gets hot. Don’t worry – they assure us that certain ‘areas’ don’t change colors. Whew…wouldn’t want your friends to know you sweat ‘down there’.
I think I will use my Modern Mom knows best wisdom and I am going to keep this little fashion gem a secret from my Modern Mini’s. They for sure would want a pair for their closet and there is no way, with good conscience, that I can let them jump into the ‘touch me my clothes change color’ trend. I can look back and giggle at my teenage memories of my color trend t-shirts. But now….It’s too much for this Modern Mom.
